PERIODONTICS
The periodontal disease is a bacterial infection which, if left untreated, can result in tooth loss. This disease is mainly caused by plaque and other factors which can contribute to the worsening of the disease: cigarettes, uncontrolled diabetes and genetics.
The periodontal diseases can be divided in two main pathologies: gingivitis and periodontitis.
Gingivitis
Gingivitis is usually caused by an incorrect dental hygiene. At this stage, the gums will be red, swollen and have tendency to bleed.
Periodontitis
Gingivitis, if left untreated, can become periodontitis. In this case, the bone tissue of the tooth can start to move. During this process, the gums separate themselves from the teeth’s roots forming periodontal bags, facilitating the build-up of bacteria and tartar underneath the gums.
